March 19, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team posted its second consecutive victory over a nationally-ranked opponent on Tuesday, as the 53rd-ranked Aztecs defeated 41st-ranked Kansas State, 5-2, at the SDSU Courts.

San Diego State, which defeated 18th-ranked Notre Dame 5-2 on Friday, improved to 7-6 on the season and enters conference action this weekend when the Aztecs travel to Salt Lake City to play Utah (Friday) and Brigham Young (Saturday). The Wildcats, which won at Brigham Young on Friday, fall to 8-4 overall.

"This is the second win over a really strong nationally-ranked team in a row," head coach Peter Mattera said. "We are playing with a lot of confidence entering league play and hopefully we can keep it rolling."

The Aztecs, which used three new doubles tandems in the match, swept all three doubles matches to claim the team point. Highlighting the sweep, was Katalina Romero and Katja Karrento's upset victory in number one doubles over the 53rd-ranked team of Alena Jecminkova and Andrea Cooper, 8-4.

San Diego State won four singles matches, including the first three, to clinch the team victory. In number one singles, Silvia Tornier defeated 111th-ranked Jecminkova, 6-3, 6-1. The Aztecs also received victories in number five and six singles from seniors Katey Becker and Julie Ann Chidley to post an unsurmountable 4-0 lead.

The Aztecs scored their fifth team point when Romero followed her upset victory at number one doubles up with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Maria Rosenberg at number four singles.

Kansas State got on the scoreboard with a pair of three-set victories. The Wildcats Kathy Chuda defeated Lindsey Hedberg, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in number two singles and 95th-ranked Petra Sedlmajerova got past Karrento, 6-3, 4-6, (10-4) in number three singles.
