FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The San Diego State track and field team got a final tune up on Saturday for the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships by competing in the NAU Mountain T's Invitational. While the event, which was held at the J.L. Walkup Skydome on the Northern Arizona campus, was not team scored it did see SDSU athletes score high marks.
The highlight of the Aztecs' competition in the field events again came in the pole vault, where senior Tricia Gutierrez hit her third NCAA provisional mark of the season. Gutierrez vaulted 3.85 meters (12-07.50), good for eighth place in the pole vault invitational.
Other top performances in the field events came from junior Ericka Englebretson, who tied for first in the open portion of the pole vault competition with a mark of 3.40 meters (11-01.75). Freshman Alisha Laswell placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.63 meters (5-04.25).
Competition in the track events saw the Aztecs score seven top-five finishes. Junior Jennifer Stakiw scored the Aztecs' highest finish of the day, taking the top spot in the 800-meter invitational with a time of 2:17.54.
Junior Melinda Smedley and sophomore Tonette Dyer finished second (24.34) and third (24.42), respectively, in the 200-meter dash invitational. Sophomore Hollann Givens and junior Jini Hogg paced one another in the 400-meter dash invitational, with Givens placing fourth (58.13) and Hogg fifth (58.57). Junior Leslie Miller came in fourth (58.56) in the 400-meter dash open. The Aztecs 4x400 relay team scored a fifth-place time of 4:00.94.
SDSU will now prepare for the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships to be held Feb. 21-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo., on the Air Force Academy campus.
