SAN DIEGO - San Diego State received three-set victories at the top two singles positions from Oliver Maiberger and Felix Hardt as 51st-ranked San Diego State rallied for a 4-3 victory over eighth-ranked SMU in the consolation round of the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship on Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
After losing the doubles point, the Aztecs posted victories in four of the six singles matches. In number three singles, Valentino Pest posted an upset win over 97th-ranked Johan Brunstrom, 6-4, 6-1. At number five singles, Ryan Redondo recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ryan Mauck. The Mustangs recorded wins at number four and number six singles.
Trailing 3-2, The Aztecs needed to win both of the remaining matches to claim their first victory in event history. At number two singles, Felix Hardt defeated Alexis Rudzinski, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. At number one singles, Oliver Maiberger, ranked 11th-nationally, posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Krystain Pfeiffer.
With the win, San Diego State improved to 3-3 on the season and will be off until playing at UCLA on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
