The San Diego State track and field team gets the indoor portion of its 2002 schedule underway this weekend by sending five athletes to the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. The event gets underway on Friday with lectures, meetings and an elite athlete exhibition. Collegiate competition starts at at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain) on Saturday and is scheduled to run until 9:30 p.m. Competition will be held at the Hilton Pavilion and will take place on seven runways.
Representing The Aztecs
Representing SDSU in Reno will be senior Tricia Guttierez and newcomers Shayla Balentine, Jesika Englebretson, Julie Hudlow and Beth Vieira. Guttierez set the school record in the indoor pole vault last season when she cleared 12-07.50 at the Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno. Balentine is featured in the January issue of Track and Field News as one of the season's prime recruits. The freshman pole vaulter, who attended Morro Bay High, won the California high school state title after clearing a record height of 13-8.
The Indoor Season At A Glance
The Aztecs continue the indoor season on Feb. 2, when they return to Reno for the Bill Cosby Invitational. The following Saturday (Feb. 9), the team will be in Flagstaff, Ariz., for the NAU Invitational. The Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 21-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo., on the Air Force Academy campus.
Coaching Staff
The Aztecs are led by head coach Rahn Sheffield, who is in his 11th season with the Aztec program. Sheffield is assisted by Jennifer Nanista, Richard Fox and Leslie Coons. Nanista oversees the team's distance corps and Fox works with the pole vaulters.
