SDSU Swimmers Get Second Half Of Season Underway

IRVINE, Calif. - The San Diego State swim team got the 2002 portion of its schedule underway with a strong showing at this weekend's Daktronics/UC Irvine Invitationals. The event was scored in three catagories with the Aztecs placed third out of 10 teams in the distance invitational, fourth of 13 in the individual invitational and sixth of eight in the relay invitational. The two-day event was held at the UCI Aquatics Complex on the UC Irvine campus.

The highlight of the weekend's distance invitational came in the 500-yard freestyle, an event in which the Aztecs placed six swimmers in the top 20. Megan Storey led the charge with a second-place time of 5:11.06. Hannah Ryan placed 11th (5:21.75), Meghan Casillan 16th (5:25.51), Heather DeFelice 17th (5:25.68), Ericka Sjoholm 19th (5:26.38) and Erin Whalen 20th (5:26.43).

SDSU also had a strong showing in the 1,000 free with Storey, DeFelice and Ryan placing third, fourth and seventh, respectively. Two Aztecs placed in the top ten in the 400 individual medley, with Erin Kilpatrick swimming to an eighth-place time of 4:44.89 and Jennifer Graham's 4:46.31 clocking gave her the event's tenth spot.

Stealing the show for the Aztecs in the weekend's individual invitational was DeFelice who earned four top-six finishes. The senior scored third-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 1:05.60 and 2:24.82, respectively. Her time in the 100 breast is a season best. She also placed fourth in the 100 free (53.49) and sixth in the 50 free (24.75).

Also lending a hand in the individual invite were Casillan and Aletta Haff, who secured sixth (1:00.56) and eighth place (1:01.28) finishes in the 100 backstroke. Jennifer Graham raced to a third-place time of 59.81 in the 100 butterfly after placed eighth in the 200 breast (2:28.38). Pacing Graham in the 100 fly were Tara Johnson and Erin Kilpatrick who placed ninth and tenth with times of 1:00.41 and 1:00.62, respectively. Storey was the highest-placing Aztec in the 200 fly, coming in fifth with a time of 2:11.15.

Competition in the relay invitational saw the Aztecs place third (1:50.88) in the 200 medley and ninth (4:08.24) in the 400 medley. SDSU's seventh-place time of 8:05.20 in the 800 free was complimented with eighth place finishes of 1:42.39 and 3:47.21 in the 200 free and 400 free, respectively.

The Aztecs return to Ivrine on Jan. 12 for a double dual with UC Irvine and Fresno State.
