Baseball Defeats Alumni Squad 2-0

Jan. 25, 2002

San Diego - The San Diego State Aztecs opened their annual baseball Alumni Weekend with a 2-0 win over a group of former players in the game played Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Prior to the contest, the baseball program honored four former players who excelled during their careers at SDSU. That foursome included Art Preston (1950-52), Jim Ritchey (1942,46), Jim Poole (1951-54) and Travis Lee (1994-96).

Four SDSU pitchers combined to limit the alums to just a pair of hits while striking out 10 and walking four. Both of the alumni hits came off the bat of catcher Brandon Rogers, who played at San Diego State from 1998-2000 before being drafted by the Angels.

The Aztecs opened the game with a run in the first inning. After opening the inning with singles by Anthony Gwynn and Carlo Cota, a double steal set the table for Taber Lee's sacrifice fly. SDSU added a run in the seventh on consecutive singles by Garrett Cook, Rielly Embrey and Landon Burt.

The alumni squad used eight pitchers, striking out a total of 13 Aztecs and giving up just pone walk. Aaron Harang, a player in the AA level of the Oakland A's organization, was the strikeout leader, fanning three in his one inning of work.

San Diego State gets its 2002 season underway next week when it travels to Hawaii-Hilo for a five-game series beginning Thursday, January 31.
