LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The San Diego State women's swim team set five season-best times Friday and maintained its second-place spot at the UNLV Winter Invitational held at Buchanan Natatorium on the UNLV campus. The Aztecs finished the second day of the three-day event with 472 points.
Highlighting Friday's competition was senior Meghan Casillan's first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. She swam the event in a season-best time of 58.03.
SDSU set two more season bests in the 800 free relay and 200 medley relay events. The team of sophomores Megan Storey and Hannah Ryan, junior Erin Kilpatrick and freshman Erin Whalen swam the 800 in 7:51.58. Casillan, sophomore Jill Karacozoff and seniors Tara Johnson and Heather DeFelice clocked in at 1:49.05 in the 200 after setting a season best of 1:48.60 in the prelims.
Kilpatrick and Johnson each earned season bests individually. Kilpatrick raced to a fourth-place time of 4:35.59 in the 400 individual medley. Johnson's time of 58.58 in the prelims of the 100 butterfly was a season best, she finished third (58.73) in the finals heat.
The Aztecs made a big push for points in the 100 breaststroke, with senior Heather DeFelice and sophomore Jennifer Graham finishing second (1:06.59) and third (1:06.67), respectively.
UNLV holds the invites top spot with 596.50 points. SDSU is a space above Fresno State, which has 393 points.
The invite concludes on Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
