Nov. 9, 2001

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo defeated Marcus Hornung and Reiner Neurohr of Baylor, 8-5, on Friday in the semifinal round of the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.

The Aztec duo will play for the national indoor championship, the second grand slam event of the season, tomorrow. Maiberger and Redondo will face Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn of SMU at 2 p.m. CST.

Last month, Maiberger won the singles title and teamed with Redondo to win the doubles title at the Omni Hotels Regional in Las Vegas. The sophomore became the first player to claim both titles in the same season.

Yesterday, Maiberger and Redondo won two matches in the 16-team doubles title. The Aztec pair disposed of Cody Conley and Joachim Lien of Louisville, 8-4, in the opening round. Then Maiberger and Redondo pulled an upset, defeating the third-seeded team of Andrew Colombo and Tiago Ruffoni of Auburn, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round.

The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship, the second-leg of the college grand slam, will conclude with the doubles champion crowned on Saturday and the singles title awarded on Sunday.

Maiberger, who entered the tournament as the third-seeded singles player, was upset in the first round of the tournament by Minnesota's Harsh Mankad, 7-5, 6-1 on Thursday. On Friday, Maiberger was eliminated from the singles consolation draw, losing to Jonathan Chu of Harvard, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (11).
