LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior Heather DeFelice set a school record in the 50-yard freestyle Thursday helping the San Diego State women's swim team finish the first day of the UNLV Winter Invitational with a second-place score of 189 points. The three-day invite is being held at Buchanan Natatorium on the UNLV campus.
DeFelice's second-place time of 23.90 in the 50 free is the fastest ever by an SDSU swimmer, surpassing Laurie Martin's time of 24.20 that was set during the 1980-81 season. Earlier this season DeFelice set the school's fifth-fastest time of 24.54 in the 50 free.
The Aztecs set season-best times in each of Thursday's other events, two of which came in relay competition. The team of sophomores Aletta Haff, Jill Karacozoff and Hannah Ryan and junior Erin Kilpatrick raced to a second-place time of 3:57.32 in the 400 medley relay. Haff teamed with seniors Tara Johnson and Heather DeFelice and sophomore Jennifer Graham to score a sixth-place finish of 1:39.81 in the 200 free relay.
Kilpatrick and senior Meghan Casillan finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 200 IM with times of 2:10.18 and 2:10.41, respectively. Sophomore Megan Storey swam a time of 5:01.45 in the 500 free, good for second place.
SDSU trails UNLV, which has a first-day point total of 281, and is a space ahead of Fresno State (167).
The invite continues Friday with prelims starting at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
