SAN DIEGO - One day after pairing with teammate Ryan Redondo to win the doubles championship, San Diego State sophomore Oliver Maiberger won the 2001 Omni Hotels Western Regional Men's Tennis Championships in Las Vegas.
Maiberger, the tournament's top seed and the 13th-ranked player nationally, defeated Boise State's Guillaume Bouvier 6-2, 6-3 to claim the victory. The victory over Bouvier, the tournament's fourth-seed and the 89th-ranked player nationally, came in straight-sets, as did all six victories by Maiberger in the regional tournament.
The 16-team, 140-player tournament began on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Maiberger and Redondo claimed the doubles championship by upsetting fourth-ranked and top-seeded Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms of Brigham Young, 8-5.
By claiming the regional championship, Maiberger, in singles, and the 46th-ranked doubles team of Redondo and Maiberger qualify for the 2001 Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships in Dallas. The tournament, the second-leg of the collegiate grand slam will be held Nov. 8-11.
