The University of New Mexico women's soccer team finished its 2001 home schedule in impressive fashion, defeating San Diego 3-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
New Mexico won its first home game of the year as it improved to 4-10-2 (3-2-1 MWC). San Diego State, which lost for the seventh time in its last nine games, saw its season record drop to 5-10-1 (1-3-1 MWC).
After a slow moving start by both teams, New Mexico struck late in the first half when freshman midfielder Rachael Addison tapped in a cross in the box from freshman forward Coco D?Angelo.
San Diego State forced New Mexico back on its heels early in the second half as sophomore forward Kim Castellanos, the MWC-leading scorer, sparked the Aztec attack after sitting out the first half. Castellanos tallied five of SDSU?s 14 second half shots, but was unable to beat Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock.
New Mexico eventually recaptured the momentum midway through the second half when sophomore midfielder Erchen Theys scored her team-leading third goal of the year on a pass from senior forward Julie Shepko. After gathering Shepko?s pass, Theys fired a shot from 22 yards out that sailed into the top-left corner of the goal beyond the reach of Aztec senior goalkeeper Linnea Quinones.
UNM increased its pressure on the SDSU defense and broke the game open at the 80:34 mark when freshman midfielder Kelly Campbell, playing in just her fifth game this season, scored her first career goal on her first career shot. Campbell?s goal was set up by a combination of passes from midfielders Casie Deegan and Tara Alarid.
Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock finished with eight saves, earned her third shout out in conference play and fourth this season. SDSU's Quinones recorded four saves and allowed all three goals before being replaced by senior Erin Haentjens in the 81st minute of play.
The Aztecs conclude their 2001 regular season next Saturday when they visit UNLV for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in Las Vegas.
