Oct. 19, 2001

Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State recorded its first tie in almost three years as it drew 1-1 with Wyoming Friday afternoon in Laramie.

The Aztecs' now have a 5-8-1 mark overall (1-1-1 in the Mountain West Conference) with three matches left to play before the conference tournament next month. The Cowgirls record now stands at 2-7-3 and 0-0-2 in league play after opening with a tie against New Mexico last weekend.

SDSU's last tie came on November 1, 1998, when it drew 1-1 with UC Irvine at home. The Aztecs had gone 61 straight matches without a draw until today. And they had to come from behind to earn a result.

Wyoming opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an unassisted goal by Renee Minero. It was Minero's first goal of the season and only the ninth scored by Wyoming in 12 contests this fall.

San Diego State knotted the score early in the seconds half when Kim Castellanos scored an unassisted goal at 46:21. Castellanos, who leads the conference in goals and points, equaled her output of last season with her 10th strike of the season. With the goal, the 20th of her career, Castellanos moves into sole possession of fifth place on the Aztec career list.

The game was an evenly played affair with SDSU outshooting Wyoming 19-16. Both Aztec goalie Linnea Quinones and Cowgirl keeper Sarah Kuyper recorded eight saves on the day. For Quinones, it was the sixth game of the season in which she has recorded eight saves or more. She now has 69 saves this year, a total that ranks as the fourth-most ever for an Aztec goalkeeper.

Up next for the Aztecs is match at Air Force on Sunday (Oct. 21) at noon.
