San Diego - Brigham Young broke a 1-1 tie with second-half goals from Kim Devine and Sarah Higham Yee, and went on to defeat San Diego State, 3-2, at the SDSU Sports deck Saturday afternoon.
With the win, The Cougars improved to 8-4-1 on the year and remained perfect in Mountain West Conference play at 2-0. The Aztec' record fell to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in league matches.
It was SDSU that took the early lead in the contest on a penalty kick converted by sophomore Kim Castellanos in the third minute of the game. The PK was awarded after forward Arinda Alvarez was tripped in the box.
BYU came back to tie the game at 16:28 when Kelly Hunsberger's long shot from the left was saved but not held by SDSU keeper Linnea Quinones. Jeni Viernes was positioned perfectly to tap in the rebound and level the score.
The Cougars took the lead for good early in the second half, again on a tap-in of a saved shot. This time it was Viernes firing from 12 yards with Quinones saving again only to have Devine there to knock it home in the 49th minute. BYU's final goal came at 60:07 when Aleisha Cramer crossed a ball in from the right side. In the ensuing scramble, Yee was able to poke the ball past Quinones to extend the Cougar's lead to 3-1.
The Aztecs made a late surge, with Castellanos scoring after defender Fay deLeon sent in a cross from the left side at 85:58. But SDSU was unable to find an equalizer, coming closest with a shot just over the bar in the waning seconds.
Quinones was the busier of the two goalies on the day, facing 18 shots and making eight saves in 66 minutes of work before giving way to fellow senior Erin Haentjens. BYU's goalkeeping tandem of Jennifer Waldron and Kylee Dickson faced a total of seven shots with no saves between them
San Diego State now concludes its 2001 season with four conference road matches, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Wyoming at 4:00 p.m. (MDT).
