SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's volleyball team beat Wyoming in a 3-1 battle at Peterson Gym on Sunday.
The match got off to a bad start with 18 errors between the teams in the game one. The Aztecs made 11 of those for a .147 hitting percentage, while the Cowgirls canceled out their seven kills with seven errors leaving them with a .000 hitting percentage and a 24-30 loss at the end of game one.
Game two seemed to fare better with the Aztecs with 13 kills versus Wyoming's 10 kills, but once again errors were a problem. The Cowgirls totaled a match-high 12 errors in game two for a -.059 clip as the Aztecs improved to a .242 hitting percentage with five errors.
Wyoming dominated in game three and came away with a 30-24 win. The Aztecs hit a match-high .407 in game three, but the Cowgirls countered with a .483 clip and 19 kills in the match.
The Aztecs claimed game four with 20 kills and a 30-21 win. A key component in the match could be seen at the net. The Aztecs total team blocks came to 10 versus the Cowgirls four. State doubled Wyoming's eight block assists in the match with 16 block assists and two solos hailing from junior Nicole Akporiaye and sophomore Aspen McPartland.
When the match was over the Aztecs walked away with 65 kills and 26 errors on 136 attempts for a .287 hitting percentage. The Cowgirls went home with 50 kills and 28 errors for a .165 clip.
Senior Katie Magnuson stood strong as team captain with a career-high 18 kills and 11 digs for a total of four double-doubles on the season. Junior Melissa Wright was the only player on both teams that went error-free on the night with five kills and a .625 hitting percentage, plus maintained her post as setter with 48 assists and 10 digs.
The Aztecs will travel to Malibu, Calif., to take on the Waves of Pepperdine on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
