Texas A&M Uses Tiebreaket to Defeat San Diego State Tennis 24-23

Sept. 30, 2001

SAN DIEGO - Alex Barragan's winning passing shot on the final point of the match enabled Texas A&M to hold off San Diego State, 24-23, and claim ninth place in the 2001 World TeamTennis Championship played at the Barnes Tennis Center on Sunday.

The teams used the World TeamTennis scoring format at the tournament. Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. One point is awarded for each game won.

Barragan's heroics upstaged a frantic San Diego State rally that resulted in a supertiebreaker. The Aggies took an early 6-1 lead after winning the women's doubles set. The Aztecs rallied behind the play of 13th-ranked Oliver Maiberger. The sophomore All-American defeated Ryan Newport, 6-4, to pull the Aztecs to within 10-7.

Texas A&M extended its lead in the men's doubles set, claiming a 6-3 victory and pushed the Aggies overall advantage to 16-10.

Once again, San Diego State used a singles match to close the deficit, this time getting a 6-3 victory from junior Katja Karrento. That gave Texas A&M a 19-16 lead entering the day's final mixed doubles set.

The Aztec team of Karrento and Travis Hasson trailed 3-2 in the set, before rallying to win four of the last five games to take the set, 6-4. By winning the final set, the Aztecs forced overtime and won the extra set to tie the score at 23.

That moved the match into a supertiebreaker, a mixed-double competition where the first team to seven points wins the team match. San Diego State and Texas A&M battled to a 6-6 draw, before Barragan's passing shot made winners of the Aggies.

Today's matches concluded the three-day college championship that was co-hosted by San Diego and San Diego State. In the championship match, Oklahoma State defeated reigning World TeamTennis champion South Alabama 27-20, to claim the third annual collegiate championship.
