San Diego - San Diego State scored on its first two shots of the game and never looked back as it went on to defeat UC Riverside, 2-0, at the San Bernardino Soccer Complex Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Aztecs improved their season mark to 4-2. The loss dropped the Highlanders, in their first season of Division I competition, to 2-1 on the year.
Sophomore Kim Castellanos opened the scoring in the eighth minute, notching her fifth goal in six games. She took a through pass from midfielder Danielle Small and deked UCR goalkeeper Katie Blank into diving for the ball. Castellanos then dribbled around the sprawling Blank and knocked the ball into the open net.
Senior Fay deLeon doubled SDSU's advantage in the 24th minute with a free kick that hit the inside of the left post and bounded into the goal.
The Aztecs outshot Riverside 14-5, and limited the hosts to just one shot in the second half. SDSU keeper Linnea Quinones was called on to make three saves on the night while posting her first clean sheet of the season. Blank recorded five saves for the home side.
With their second two-game win streak in hand, the Aztecs return home this weekend for their sternest test of the young season as they take on the 13th-ranked California Golden Bears at the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday (Sept. 23). Kickoff for that match is set for 1:00 p.m.
