The San Diego State women's tennis team finished the 2001 season with a 17-8 mark in dual meet competition and a final ranking of 43rd by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association after earning a preseason ranking of 27th.
The Aztecs' 6-1 record in the Mountain West Conference was good enough for a second-place, regular-season finish, allowing the team to enter the league championship in Fort Collins, Colo., in April as the second seed.
At the conference tournament, the Aztecs posted identical 4-0 wins over No. 7 Air Force and No. 6 Colorado State before losing to top-seed Brigham Young, 4-3, in the league's title match. Five members of the Aztec squad were named to the 2001 all-MWC team. Sophomores Lindsey Hedberg, Katja Karrento and Silvia Tornier, along with senior Whitney Wells, were named to the league's singles team. The doubles pairs of Tornier and Hedberg, and Wells and junior Julie Chidley earned a spot on the doubles squad. Karrento and Wells are two-time all-MWC performers. The Aztecs were twice honored with the league's player of the week award, with Hedberg being named both times.
SDSU had three players turn in 20-win seasons in singles, with Karrento finishing with a 26-7 mark and Hedberg, 21-10. Junior Katey Becker finished the year 20-10.
Throughout the season several players earned a spot in the ITA rankings. Tornier received the highest singles rating of any member with a ranking of 58th at one point in the year. Joining Tornier in the singles rankings was Karrento who spent time at 93rd. The Aztecs placed two doubles pairs in the preseason top 25 with Hedberg and Tornier at 19th and Wells and Karrento (22). Hedberg and Tornier would climb as high as 30th and Wells and Karrento 44th once the spring campaign got underway.
The Aztecs were also well represented in regional rankings with Wells and Karrento ranked third in doubles in the West. Representing SDSU in regional singles ratings were Tornier (6), Hedberg (18) and Karrento (23).
Eighteen teams on the Aztecs' spring schedule were ranked entering the season. Four schools on SDSU's docket ended the year rated in the top 25: Southern California (8), Washington (11), California (12) and Pepperdine (20). Seventeen of the Aztecs' opponents during the season were ranked at the time of their match with SDSU taking a 9-8 record in those contests.
Eighth-year head coach Peter Mattera, improved his career record to 121-74 (62.1 pct.).
