STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 9 San Diego State women's water polo team (21-15) defeated No. 17 Hartwick, 10-1, in its first matchup at the the National Collegiate Select Championships held at Pacific.
The Aztecs gained the early momentum by scoring two unanswered goals in the first quarter. Hartwick's only goal was scored by Megan Thompson in the second quarter. Freshman Holly Hartzell led the Aztecs with a career-high six goals. Kelly Falcone recorded two goals and Amber Prestegard and Whitney Winlow each had one.
Falcone and Casey Finnegan headed up the defense with five steals a piece. Junior goalie Heather Stiles had three saves while Freshman Ashley Zabel had two.
The Aztecs continue action at the National Collegiate Select Championships with Saturday games against No. 13 Cal Baptist at 11:20 a.m. and No. 10 UC Davis at 5:10 p.m.
