Aztecs Honored on All-Region Softball Team

May 18, 2001

SAN DIEGO - Senior right-hander Sandra Durazo and junior second baseman Sarah Hershman have both been named to the 25-member 2001 Louisville Slugger West Region Softball Team. With the selection to the region team, both players are eligible for the All-American team, to be announced next week.

Durazo was one of just two pitchers named to the region first team. A native of Granada Hills, Calif., the right-hander entered Friday's play with a 28-13 record, 1.71 ERA and 183 strikeouts. She has set school season record for victories, innings pitched, games started, complete games and strikeouts. During the Aztecs late season run, the senior has been even more effective, posting a 9-2 record with a 1.10 ERA in San Diego State's last 11 games.

Hershman, one of two second basemen on the squad, earned second team honors after posting a .315 batting average with 24 runs batted, 27 runs scored and a team-high 15 stolen bases. A produce of Mt. Carmel High in San Diego, the junior committed just nine errors in playing a team-high 61 games.

The Aztecs, the fourth-seeded team in the Los Angeles Region, continue play in the NCAA tournament Friday afternoon when San Diego State battles fifth-seeded Wisconsin in a winner's bracket game. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. PDT.
