IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State women's track and field athletes posted the top times in 11 heats, including both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays during the opening day of competition at the 2001 Cal/Nevada State Track and Field Championships, Saturday. As a result, 13 Aztecs have qualified to compete in Sunday's finals.
Sophomore Melinda Smedley advanced in both the 100 and 200 meters, winning both of her heats and clocking the fastest time of the day in the 100. In fact, Smedley improved her No. 7 mark in the SDSU history books in the 100 meters with a time of 11.80.
Junior Daveetta Shepherd moved on in three events, winning her heats in both the 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles, and placing second in her heat of the 200 meters.
In addition to Shepherd, San Diego State will have two other athletes in Sunday's 100-meter hurdles final as seniors Marisa Robinson and Aja Frary both advanced. Frary, who brought home SDSU's only points of the day with her second-place leap of 19-06.25 in the long jump, also reached the finals in the 400-meter hurdles, winning her heat and clocking the third-best time of the day in the event by covering the lap in 61.16.
