HONOLULU - The eighth-seeded San Diego State water polo team (19-13, 4-6) defeated ninth-seeded Long Beach State, 7-6, in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Water Polo Championship at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex in Honolulu.
Freshman Holly Hartzell led the Aztecs scoring, four goals. Jackie Lopez added two goals while Heidi Matsumoto had one. Freshman goalie Ashley Zabel recorded 10 saves for the Aztecs.
"The game was very physical and a hard fought win for us," said head coach Carin Crawford.
The Aztecs will play No. 1 Stanford in the second round Friday at 5:00 p.m.
