San Diego State athletes set 21 new season bests as the Aztec women's track and field team enjoyed plenty of success at both the Mt. San Antonio College Relays and the Long Beach Invitational.
Senior Aja Frary, who broke Carrie McLaughlin's 18-year-old record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon with 5675 points, led the way with five season-bests.
Junior Daveetta Shepherd, sophomore Melinda Smedley and senior Promise Mose also had strong weekends. All three clocked new seasonal bests in the 100 and 200 meters, with Shepherd also running the fastest time by an Aztec this year in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the distance events, sophomore Jennifer Stakiw, junior Hillery Gemmill and senior Sophia Hawker each ran season-best in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore Alicia Stewart ran her fastest time of the year in the 5000 meters.
The San Diego State track and field team returns to action this weekend when the Aztecs travel up the road to Irvine for the 2001 Cal-Nevada State Championships, April 28-29.
