Complete Event-By-Event Final Results
AZUSA, Calif. - Aztec senior Aja Frary totaled 2274 points in the final three events at the Mt. San Antonio College Heptathlon Friday to finish tied for third with a career-high score of 5657 points.
Frary's point total, which was the best among the collegiate entrants and automatically qualified the senior for both the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as well as the USA Track and Field national meet later this year, set a new San Diego State record in the heptathlon, eclipsing Carrie McLaughlin's 18-year-old total of 5620. The mark is also a Mountain West Conference record and stands as the fifth-best point total in the world in the heptathlon this year.
Germany's Sabine Krieger finished with 6041 points to win the event. Nike's Trayce Lawyer, the leader after Thursday's opening round, placed second with 5690 points, just 33 points ahead of Frary.
Frary scored 3383 points during the opening day of competition and entered the final three events in fourth place. Friday she picked up third-place finishes in the long jump (19-04.75) and the 800 meters (2:17.59) and a fifth in the javelin (118-11.00). Her second-day point total of 2274 was the third-best of the 11 athletes to complete the competition.
In the California Invitational Heptathlon, also at Azusa Pacific University, SDSU's Leslie Miller rallied from 21st to finish in 17th, scoring 1846 points over the final three events to finish with a total of 4447. It was just the first attempt at the heptathlon this year for the Aztec sophomore.
University divisions at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., get underway Friday night with competition in the distance and field events. Track and relay events are scheduled to be contested on Saturday and Sunday. Complete results will be released when available.
