AZUSA, Calif. - San Diego State senior Aja Frary totaled 3383 points to finish the opening day of the heptathlon competition at the Mt. San Antonio College relays in fourth place. Frary posted season-bests in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and shot put en route to her point total, which was the best among the nine collegiate entrants.
Nike's Trayce Lawyer, who won two of the day's four events, scored 3734 points to lead the 14-athlete field. Germany's Sabine Krieger and Canada's Nicloe Haynes rounded out the top three spots with 3545 and 3410 points, respectively.
Frary had her best finish in the 200 meters, running a time of 23.90 for the second-best clocking of the day. However, the senior wracked up her highest point total of the event, 971, with her time of 14.05 in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the California Invitational Heptathlon, also at Azusa Pacific University, SDSU's Leslie Miller finished the opening day of competition in 21st place with 2601 points. The event is just the second career attempt at the heptathlon for the Aztec sophomore, who has missed the early part of the 2001 season with a stress fracture.
Competition concludes with the final three events in both heptathlons on Friday. The Mt. SAC Relays also get underway on Friday in Walnut, Calif., with competition in the distance and field events.
