This Week
The No. 31 San Diego State men's golf team will compete at the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic, hosted by Brigham Young, Friday and Saturday, April 20-21. The 54-hole event will be played at the 72 par, 6,950-yard Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.
Four of the the 16 teams are ranked in the top 50 according to last week's Golfweek poll, No. 24 Brigham Young, No. 31 San Diego State, No. 40 Tulsa and No. 50 Nevada. The remainder of the field includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Utah State, Southern Utah, Utah, Texas-El Paso, UC Santa Barbara, Weber State and Wyoming.
Recapping The Western Intercollegiate
Sophomore Lars Johansson won individual honors at the Western Intercollegiate, April 5th at the Pasatiemp Golf Course, in a playoff. SDSU placed 14th overall with a three-round total of 896 (284-301-311).
Johansson scored a 206 (65-67-74) to tie with Jason Higton of Pacific. Johansson teed off into the trees and still managed to par the playoff hole to claim the victory. The last Aztec to win the Western Intercollegiate was Ron O'Connor in 1960. Golf professionals Dusty Waldorf, Scott Simpson, Tom Watson, Peter Jacobson and Bobby Clampett are a few others who have won the Western Intercollegiate.
Aztecs In The Rankings
SDSU fell to 31th from 21st in the April 12th Golfweek Magazine poll. Sophomore Lars Johansson is the only San Diego State individual ranked in Golfweek's top 100. He improved to 52nd from 85th after winning the Western Intercollegiate.
Catching Up
Prior to the Western Intercollegiate, The Aztecs won the Oregon Duck Invitational by one stroke, shooting an 871, March 27, at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Three Aztecs finished in the top 10 among 92 competitors. SDSU was led by junior John Lepak, who placed third with a 214 (74-70-70). Sophomore John Lieber scored a 215 (70-72-73), good for fifth. Freshman Mark Warman competed as an individual and finished seventh with a 218 (76-72-70).
The Fall Recap
The Aztecs enjoyed a ranking as high as fifth in the nation according to the Golfweek magazine poll. The team won two titles in five tournaments. They won the Pacific Invite by finishing 19-under-par (281-279-285-845). The Aztecs completed the fall with a win at the Aztec Invitational, shooting an 870, 18-under-par. They also placed second in two tournaments.
