LONG BEACH, Calif. - The seventh-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team won two of its three matches Friday in day one of the Long Beach State Invitational. The Aztecs defeated UC Irvine, 10-6, and UC Santa Barbara, 8-7, and lost to Cal Baptist, 8-4.
SDSU (16-10) opened the day against UC Irvine scoring nine of its 10 total goals in the first three quarters. Aztec Casey Finnegan lead all scorers with four goals and got help from Whitney Winlow and Holly Hartzell who had two apiece. The Aztecs' Heather Stiles carded 12 saves.
A four-goal onslaught in the third quarter helped the Aztecs take an 8-5 lead over UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos would find the net twice in the final quarter but it would not be enough. SDSU recorded 13 saves with Stiles (10) and Ashley Zabel splitting time in the net.
SDSU got on the board first versus Cal Baptist but five straight goals by the Lancers would make the score 5-1 at the end of three quarters of play. The Aztecs attempted a comeback with a three-goal scoring burst in the fourth quarter but three scores by Cal Baptist would put things out of reach. SDSU's Stiles had seven saves in the losing effort.
The Aztecs face third-ranked Southern California and UC Santa Cruz tomorrow in day two of the invite.
