Aztecs Start Busy Week with Home Doubleheader Against St. Mary's, Continue MWC Play on Friday Fresh off of its split with conference leader Utah last Friday, San Diego State concludes its six game homestand with a nonconference doubleheader against the Saint Mary's Gaels on Wednesday at SDSU Field. The Aztecs will conclude a stretch of six games in five days in three states by hitting the road this weekend to continue Mountain West play with doubleheaders against the New Mexico Lobos and Colorado State Rams. The contest against the Gaels will bring an end to the shortened homestand for the Aztecs. The conference doubleheader against the Brigham Young Cougars on Saturday was postponed due to rain. There is currently no plan to make-up the games. Saint Mary's comes to Montezuma Mesa with an overall record of 18-21. They are 1-3 in West Coast Conference play. SDSU travels to Albuquerque on Friday to play New Mexico. The Lobos are 30-15-1 overall and have a 3-2-1 record in the conference. On Sunday, the Aztecs will be in Ft. Collins, Colo., to battle Colorado State. The Rams are 0-5 in the Mountain West and have an overall record of 3-28. San Diego State is 25-15 overall, and has won 13 of their last 18 games. The Aztecs boast a 2-2 record in the Mountain West Conference after their split with Utah. The 6-3 loss to the Utes in game two marked only the third loss at SDSU Field this season for the Aztecs, which also saw its six game home winning streak snapped in the defeat and snapped a 14-game winning streak against unranked foes at SDSU Field. Following this week's action, the Aztecs will start the second round of conference play by entertaining the UNLV Rebels on Saturday, April 21. Game time is 1 p.m.

Aztecs Split Twinbill with Utah The San Diego State softball team came within one out of sweeping the defending conference champion at SDSU Field on Friday afternoon. After defeating Utah, 7-1, in the first game, the Aztecs led 3-1 before the Utes rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to claim a 6-3 victory and a split of the doubleheader. In the first game, Aztec senior Sandra Durazo pitched a complete game to improve to 14-7 on the season. A native of Granada Hills, Calif., Durazo scattered six hits and did not issue a walk in the contest. She got all the offensive help she would need from freshman center fielder Janna Kovensky. Kovensky, who went 5-for-5 on the afternoon, was 3-for-3 in the first contest with two runs scored and two RBI for the Aztecs. The Aztecs were in good position to record a sweep, taking a 3-1 lead to the seventh inning of the second game. With two outs, left fielder Ambelry Jeppson reached on an infield single to score Masie Ota from third to cut the Aztec lead to 3-2. Third baseman Lyndsey Trevis then doubled down the left field line, scoring Molly McLean and Jeppson to put the Utes on top 4-3. One batter later Melissa Stahnke completed a 3-for-4 game with her 13th home run of the season. The seventh inning rally made a winner out of Kristin Arbogast, who started and completed both games of the doubleheader for the Utes. San Diego State, winners of 13 of its last 18 contests, is 25-15 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play, while Utah moves to 23-16-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play.

Aztec Triple Threat The trio of Sarah Hershman, Kellie Nordhagen and Janna Kovensky have supplied San Diego State with plenty of offensive punch since the start of conference play. As of this week, they lead the Aztecs in all major offensive categories and hold three of the top 10 Mountain West Conference spots in league batting average. Kovensky, a freshman from Rancho Bernardo, leads San Diego State with a .583 batting average in conference play, highlighted by her 5-for-5 performance against Utah last weekend. She currently holds the number three spot in the Mountain West Conference in this category. For the season, she is batting .281, with two home runs and 17 RBI. Hershman's .529 MWC batting average is second on the team and fifth in the league. The junior, also a San Diego native (Mt. Carmel High), leads the team with nine conference hits and three RBI. Her overall batting average of .386 leads the Aztecs. Junior Kellie Nordhagen rounds out the trio with a conference batting average of .400, ninth in the Mountain West. She leads San Diego State with 132 hits on the year. Only league leading Utah has more hitters in the top ten then San Diego State, with four.
