SANTA BARBARA - The No. 16 San Diego State women's water polo team (7-5) defeated No. 17 Princeton, 6-5, this morning and upset No. 11 UC Davis, 6-5, this afternoon in the consolation bracket of the Gaucho Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
SDSU pulled out a close win against No. 17 Princeton, 6-5. Sophomore Heidi Matsumoto scored two goals along with Whitney Winlow, Casey Finnegan and Holly Hartzell each scoring one. Junior Heather Stiles had five saves in the goal. This is the second time the two teams met this weekend. The Aztecs also defeated the Tigers, 9-8, on Friday.
"Princeton was a lot better team and a lot more prepared to play us this time," said head coach Carin Crawford.
San Diego State claimed its first win of the season against a higher ranked team by defeating No. 11 UC Davis, 6-5, in the championship match of the consolation bracket at the Gaucho Invitational. The Aztecs were led by Winlow, Finnegan, Hartzell, Jackie Lopez, Amber Prestegard and Kelly Falcone each scoring one goal. Stiles recorded eight saves in the goal.
"I feel we really improved throughout the tournament," said Crawford. "The wins should give us a lot of positive momentum going into this week's games."
The Aztecs lost in the first round of the invitational to No. 12 Loyola Marymount, 9-8, and advanced in the first round of consolation by defeating Pacific, 10-3.
The Aztecs will play their first home game Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m. versus No. 9 Michigan at Bud Kearns Pool in Balboa Park.
