COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With many of its top performers having completed their indoor eligibility, San Diego State sent just on athlete to this year's Mountain West Conference Championships - pole vaulter Tricia Gutierrez.
A junior who just two weeks ago set SDSU's indoor record in the pole vault, Gutierrez made her trip worth while, clearing 12' 1/2" Friday afternoon to take second place.
Air Force's Ana Maria Ortega vaulted the identical height, but was awarded first place based on fewer misses.
Melissa Coombs of Brigham Young topped 11' 6 1/2" to place third.
San Diego State returns to action on Saturday, March 3, when the Aztecs travel to Los Angeles for the USC Invitational. The Aztecs host their first-ever home meet on the new Choc Sportsman Oval at the SDSU Sports Deck just one week later when three teams come to town for the SDSU Spring Quad Meet, March 10.
