RENO, Nev. - Junior Tricia Gutierrez set a personal best in the pole vault and classmate Deveetta Shepard won the 55-meter hurdles to lead the San Diego State women's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the Bill Cosby Invitational Saturday. Host school Nevada won the meet with 102 points, while Fresno State (97.50) and UNLV (74.00) finished second and third, respectively.
Gutierrez's leap in the pole vault was one of the meet's highlights for the Aztecs, who traveled just 14 athletes to the meet. A transfer from Cal State Fullerton, Gutierrez placed third in the event, collecting six points for the SDSU with a jump of 12-07.50. In addition to being a personal best, the vault was also a new San Diego State indoor record as well as an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Guttierez's previous best vaults were 11-3.75 indoors and 12-3.50 outdoors. Guttierez was the top attached collegiate finisher in the field as both the first and second place finishers were unattached athletes.
Shepard, who placed second in the 55-meter hurdles during the preliminaries, came back to win the final with a time of 8.32.
Other notable performances by San Diego State athletes included senior Promise Mose's fourth-place finish in the 55-meter dash, sophomore Melinda Smedley's second-place clocking in the 200 meters, and Alicia Stewart's fourth-place finish in the mile run.
San Diego State closes out its indoor season Feb. 22-24, when the Aztecs compete at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships.
