Aztecs To Compete At the Buick Invitational

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore John Lieber and graduate assistant coach Magnus Carlsson will be teeing off at approximately 9:20 a.m. Thursday at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Lieber and Carlsson earned a spot to compete at the Buick by being the top two finishers at the amateur qualifying round held in October. at Torrey Pines. Carlsson shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the qualifying. Lieber earned the second qualifier spot with a 70 after a two-hole playoff with state amateur champion Nick Jones of USC.

This will be Carlsson's second trip to the Buick Invitational. He also qualified in 1997, but did not advance to the weekend

"This time I'm really hoping to make the cut," said Carlsson. "I played a solid round of golf in the qualifier and hopefully I'll continue to play that way."

Immediately following the Buick, Lieber and Carlsson will head to Hawaii to help their team, Lieber as a player and Carlsson as a coach. The San Diego State golf team is ranked 10th in Golfweek magazine's poll. The Aztecs first compete this season at the Taylor Made/ Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
