Dec. 13, 2000

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's tennis team received a good omen for its spring season when two of its doubles teams were listed in the top 25 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings, released Wednesday.

The sophomore pair of Lindsey Hedberg and Silvia Tornier earned the highest ranking for the Aztecs at 19th. The doubles team made up of sophomore Katja Karrento and senior Whitney Wells are rated 22nd.

San Diego State is ranked 27th as a team entering the spring season. The Aztecs placed one athlete in the singles rankings, with Tornier coming in at 46th.

"The rankings further my belief that we are going to have an outstanding year," said head coach Peter Mattera. "It's a tribute to our players' hard work this fall and is a sign that this program is one of the best in the nation. We will do our best to back up these rankings in our strong spring dual season."

SDSU comes off a 16-10 2000 season in which it advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Aztecs get their spring schedule underway in January when they host Pacific on the 27th and Rice on the 28th at the SDSU Tennis Courts.
