FLAGSTAFF, Ariz - The San Diego State women's swimming and diving team won seven of 14 events, but it was not enough as the Aztecs fell 160-138 to Northern Arizona Saturday at the Wall Aquatic Center in the 2000-01 dual-meet opener for both teams.
Four of the seven events taken by the Aztecs were by two athletes - junior Heather DeFelice and freshman Megan Storey. DeFelice finished tops in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1 minute, 07.94 seconds and 2:28.45 respectively. DeFelice also finished second (2:14.61) in the 200 individual medley. Storey took the 1,000 freestyle in 10:36.18 and the 500 free (5:13.05).
SDSU threatened victory late when junior Tara Johnson, senior Mariana Leuvano and sophomore Erin Kilpatrick finished 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly. It was the diving that brought NAU back, and a 1-3-4 NAU finish in the 200 IM clinched the meet.
The Aztecs also won the 400 medley relay event with the team of juniors Meghan Casillan, DeFelice and Johnson along with freshman Hannah Ryan swimming the event in 4:00.73.
The meet was historic, in that it was the first collegiate meet in Flagstaff to be swum on a 25-yard course, thanks to the installation of a bulkhead in Wall Aquatic Center, which has a 25- by 50-meter pool.
SDSU returns to action next weekend when it competes against rival San Diego. The meet will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at USD.
