San Diego - A sloppy outing by the San Diego State women's soccer team led to Pepperdine emerging with a 2-0 win on Thursday at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The Aztecs (3-8-0 overall) came out sluggish in the first half, and the Waves (8-1-1 overall) made them pay immediately. At the 5:24 mark, Pepperdine's Kate Desmond wiggled away from the SDSU defense and beat Aztec goalkeeper Linnea Qui?ones on a breakaway. SDSU continued to struggle following the goal, and Pepperdine's Susan Palmer capitalized at the 21:28 mark when she calmly finished a deflection off a corner kick taken by Stacia Spangler.
The Aztecs had a chance to cut into the lead just before halftime when forward Boo Robinson blasted a shot that hit off the post. With the Waves' goalkeeper sprawling out of position, the shot rebounded directly to SDSU's leading scorer, Fay deLeon. The Aztecs would have nothing to show for the chance, however, as deLeon sent her shot well over the bar with nine seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
SDSU came out of halftime playing significantly better than it did in first half, but was unable to muster any serious threat to the Pepperdine defense.
The Aztecs' loss was their first ever to the Waves. Prior to this contest, SDSU and Pepperdine had met twice (once in 1993 and once in 1997), with the Aztecs claiming both games.
SDSU will look to bounce back when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Sports Deck.
