SAN DIEGO - San Diego State will usher forth a new era in Aztec football this season as SDSU will take the field in completely redesigned uniforms courtesy of Russell Athletic and Schutt Sports. The one-of-a-kind design, which Russell is making available only to SDSU for the 2000 season but intends to roll out nationwide next year, retains the Aztecs' all-black tradition that began in the early 1960s under legendary coach Don Coryell while at the same time updating the look for the new millennium.

It is the first major home uniform design overhaul since the early 80s when SDSU briefly donned white pants under coach Doug Scovil. The all-black look soon returned and remained fairly consistent, with subtle alterations such as the addition of a shoulder strip inset, throughout the coaching tenures of Denny Stolz, Al Luginbill and Ted Tollner.

The new home uniform is, as tradition dictates, mostly black. However, a solid red panel that flows across the shoulder pads now replaces the shoulder stripe inset. A new "Aztec design" jacquard trims both the neckline, sleeve and pant leg, and SDSU's "Monty" logo has been added to the sleeve. The player names and numbers also have an updated look courtesy of Russell's new "Aztec" font.

The changes in SDSU's new road uniform are much less dramatic, as the Aztecs will continue to be decked out in all-white jerseys and black pants when playing away from Qualcomm Stadium. The jacquard trim and Monty logo along with the new name and number font are the major upgrades to the road uniform.

The Aztecs' head gear also received an updated look thanks to Schutt. Though the decal on the side of the helmet remains the same, the red used on the hat has been darkened a few shades to better match the red in the jersey. An air-brushed dusting of black paint around the face mask, ear holes and back of the helmet completes the unique design.

The helmet is outfitted with Schutt's new titanium cage, which is significantly lighter than traditional steel face masks. SDSU was one of the first two collegiate programs in the nation to equip its helmets with the new face mask.

Russell first approached SDSU with the idea of updating the uniform in early February. Since then, design proposals have gone back and forth between the two parties until the final version was agreed upon late this spring.
