July 10, 2000

SAN DIEGO - Six San Diego State track and field athletes, including three current Aztecs, will be out to earn a ticket to Sydney, Australia, and the 2000 Olympic games when USA Track and Field holds its 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, later this week in Sacramento.

The 10-day event, which runs July 14-23, will feature eight days of competition with the potential for an Aztec to be in action each of those days. NBC will provide eight hours of live network television coverage on the four weekend days. Complete results will be made available on the internet at flashresults.com.

Things get going early for San Diego State athletes with a pair of Aztecs hitting the track during the meet's opening day this Friday. Aja Frary, who will return for her senior season at SDSU this fall, is the first Aztec scheduled to compete as Day 1 of the heptathlon gets underway with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. Also in action on Friday will be two-time All-American Miesha McKelvy in the 100-meter dash.

Day 2 will see the final four evens of the heptathlon contested as well as the finals in the 100 meters. Also in action on Saturday will be former Aztec and a 1988 Seoul Olympics participant Latanya Sheffield, who is slated to run in the 400-meter hurdles.

The three remaining Aztecs, Aimee Crabtree, Alexa Harz and Felicia Stone, are scheduled to make their debuts during the final three days of competition. Crabtree -- the fourth female athlete ever to clear 13 feet in the pole vault -- and Harz will take their shot at the U.S. Olympic team on Friday, July 21, when qualifying begins in the pole vault at 2 p.m. Stone, who was the only Aztec to qualify for this year's NCAA championships, along with SDSU 100-meter hurdles record holder McKelvy, run in the 100-meter hurdles opening rounds Saturday, July 22, at 9:45 a.m.
