San Diego - The San Diego State softball team swept a doubleheader with the University of San Diego Saturday afternoon at USD Softball Complex.
In game one, San Diego State jumped on the board first when Sarah Hershman drove in Kellie Nordhagen to put the Aztecs up 1-0. The Toreros rallied in the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits. SDSU tied the game in the fifth when Hershman doubling to score Nordhagen. Tami Simpson led off the fifth with a single for SDSU. With two outs in the fifth, Nordhagen doubled to score Simpson for SDSU's winning run. Aztec hurler Sandra Durazo picked up the win to go to 23-8 on the year while Amy Lopez (15-15) suffered the loss for USD.
Game two saw a eight-inning pitchers' dual as neither team could score a run in the first seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Alexis Gutierrez led off with a single to center field for SDSU. Kellie Labor advanced Gutierrez to second with a sacrifice bunt. Hershman brought Gutierrez home on a single to right field. SDSU pitcher Olivia Catron (7-5) earned the complete-game shut out when she retired three batters in the home-half of the eighth. Lopez (15-16) picked up the loss as USD is now 26-25 on the season. SDSU improves to 33-23 on the year.
