PROVO, Utah. - The San Diego State softball swept Brigham Young in a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Harmon Field in Provo, Utah.
In game one, SDSU's Kellie Labor went 2-4 and hurler Sandra Durazo struck out six en route to a 6-1 Aztec victory.
SDSU and BYU were knotted in a 1-1 tie after five innings, but the Aztec bats came alive in the sixth. Labor led off the inning with a single to left field, which was followed by a Sarah Hershman single. Tiffany Goudy then advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, and an error by Cougar pitcher Meghann Pricer allowed Labor to come home. Christy Sears then doubled, allowing Hershman and Goudy to score. The Aztecs would add two more runs on two hits to close out the inning.
Durazo improved to 19-7 on the season while Pricer fell to 4-11.
The Aztecs and Cougars would take nine innings to decide game two. SDSU got on the board first when Tashie Agui?aga singled to bring home Goudy. Agui?aga would add another run on a Vanessa Villegas single.
BYU struck back in the fourth inning when Becca Erikson evened the game with one swing of the bat, bringing home Brooke Cadiente and Jackie Ellis.
Alexis Gutierrez would be the hero of game two when she brought home Agui?aga with the game-winning run on a single in the ninth. Durazo would earn the win, as she relieved Korin Gregory in the bottom of the ninth. Durazo is now 20-7 and Maryon Dewitt is 5-9.
San Diego State is now 29-21 on the year, 9-3 MWC, while BYU is 10-21, 2-10 MWC.
