Softball Takes Two from St. Mary's

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team defeated St. Mary's (Calif.), 5-2 and 3-1, today at SDSU Field. The Aztecs have now won 10 of their last 12 games.

Sophomore Alexis Gutierrez would lead the Aztecs in the first game, going 2-3 and scoring two runs. Sarah Hershman added a an RBI and a run for SDSU.

In game one, St. Mary's would strike first when Trisha Dean singled to right field, bringing home Tiffany Redding and Talaya Turner in the third inning.

The Aztecs fought back, scoring four of their runs in the home half of the third. Vanessa Villegas opened the SDSU scoring when she crossed home on a Kellie Labor ground out to second. On the next at bat, Hershman singled, scoring Gutierrez and Kellie Nordhagen. Hershman would later score on a Christy Sears single.

Sandra Durazo (18-7) earned the win, and Jenn Pick (14-14) suffered the loss.

Game two saw Aztec hurler Korin Gregory earn her first victory of the year, and Hershman cap off a solid afternoon, going 2-3 and scoring a run.

SDSU did all of its damage in the fourth. Hershman opened the inning with a single to center field and would go on to score on an Alicia Ortman ground out. Summer Ehrsam and Gutierrez also batted in runs to give the Aztecs the lead.

Gael pitcher Tracy Bealer allowed only five hits in the game, but walked five. The Gaels also stranded 10 runners compared to five for SDSU.

The wins improve the Aztecs to 27-21 overall, 7-3 in the Mountain West Conference. St. Mary's falls to 17-26 on the year.

The Aztecs will be in Utah this weekend when they take on BYU on Friday and Utah on Saturday. Both are doubleheaders with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
