Water Polo Comes Up Short against Bruins

SAN DIEGO - The 11th-ranked Aztec water polo team gave the third-ranked UCLA Bruins a run for their money, but fell short, 8-6, on Saturday at Bud Kearns Pool in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up.

The Bruins jumped ahead early by scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the game. But the Aztecs came back and tied the score at 4-4 in the third quarter. SDSU had a shot at winning in the fourth after a goal by Shannon Halpin put the Aztecs ahead by one, 6-5, but UCLA fought back with three goals in the final 3:30. Kelly Falcone and Amber Prestegard led the Aztec attack with two goals apiece. Larisa Baltgalvis, the leading scorer for SDSU, was held scoreless. The Aztecs record now stands at 4-8, 1-2 MPSF.

The Bruins had a balanced offense with eight players scoring one goal apiece. UCLA's record improves to 13-2, 3-0 MPSF.

SDSU returns to action on Thursday, March 9, to face Long Beach State in Long Beach. Game time is set for 4 p.m. The Aztecs will be home on Saturday, March 11, against Hawai'i. The game will begin at noon at Bud Kearns Pool.
