Fifth-Ranked Water Polo Falls to No. 1 USC, 12-8

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's water polo fell to the USC Women of Troy, 12-8, Thursday, at Bud Kearns Pool in the season and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both squads.

Play was even in the first quarter, but the Trojans jumped ahead 6-2 in the second and held off a late fourth-quarter Aztec run to take the victory.

USC's Nina Wengst led all scores with seven goals in the contest, all in the second and third quarters. San Diego State's Larisa Baltgalvis and Amber Prestegard scored three goals apiece. Aztec goalkeeper Curran Teigen defended well, recording eight saves.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at 11:20 a.m., in first round action of the UCSD Invitational at Canyonview Pool on the UCSD campus.
