Box Score

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State used a combination of timely hitting and solid pitching to sweep a doubleheader at Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday, January 29. The Aztecs (3-1) won the first game, a seven-inning affair, by a score of 13-2, and captured the nightcap 11-6.

The wins were SDSU's second and third of the season after they had dropped the opening game of the five-game series last Thursday. The Vulcans' season record fell to 5-6.

In the openner, sophomore righthander Chris Dunwell scattered 5 hits and struck out seven enroute to his first win and initial complete game as an Aztec.

Offensivley, the Aztecs exploded for six runs in the opening frame, capped by a three-run homer by catcher Brandon Rogers. Freshman shortstop Taber Lee made his first start and responded with a pair of hits including a double and five runs batted in. First-year third baseman Garrett Cook had three hits and a pair of runs scored.

In game two, junior lefthander Ben Julianel made his Aztec debut on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out eight to pick up the win. Four others saw action in relief including Marcos Mendoza and Rory Shortell who struck out five batters over the final two innings.

First baseman Chad Chop led SDSU offensively with four hits, a double, walk and four RBIs. Catcher Ben Rosenthal contributed a pair of hits and three RBIs while Paul Lockahrt cracked his first home run of the year.

The Aztecs and Vulcans conclude the series with a game Sunday (Jan. 30) afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Kona.
