SAN DIEGO - San Diego State completed its season-opening five game series at Hawaii-Hilo by dropping a 5-2 decision to the Vulcans in a game played in Kailua-Kona on Sunday, January 30.
Senior Jermey Cook, who started game one of the series for SDSU, got the call to start the series finale. He threw three innings and departed with a 2-1 lead. However, the Aztecs (3-2) could not hold on as their offense struggled to solve Hilo (6-6) hurlers Benn Siff and Luke Holscher. The Vulcan duo gave up just two earned runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out seven.
Junior John Skinner, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, took the loss for SDSU, allowing three runs in his two innings of relief.
Center fielder Billy Monmgomery was the lone Aztec with more than one hit, contributing a pair of singles.
SDSU's first run came on a Tabor Lee double and Paul Lockhart triple in the third inning. In the fourth, Chad Chop's leadoff double was converted into a run by Ben Leuthard's two-out single.
Up next for the Aztecs is a three-game series against 23rd-ranked Oklahoma State. That series, which will be played in Yuma, Arizona, begins on Friday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m..
