ALBUQUERQUE - Aztec freshman Jamey Cox scored 14 points, including four three-pointers, but it wasn't enough to rescue San Diego State from a 20-point halftime deficit as SDSU was defeated, 65-47, by New Mexico in front of 7,146 at the Pit Thursday night.
"We just dug ourselves too big of a hole to climb out of," said SDSU head coach Barb Smith. "When they (New Mexico) get rolling and the crowd gets into, this is a tough environment to come back in. I was proud of how our kids battled in the second half."
Junior Anita Bundage had a team-high six rebounds to go along with eight points and classmate Shannon Lee dished out eight assists for SDSU (5-11, 0-3 Mtn. West).
Miranda Sanchez led all scorers with 17 points for New Mexico (11-4, 2-0 Mtn. West).
The Aztecs actually got off to a strong start, scoring the game's first six points before the Lobos countered with a 22-2 run to take a 22-8 lead with 11:11 remaining in the first half. UNM never trailed again and led by as many as 23 points before intermission.
SDSU outscored New Mexico, 23-21 in the second stanza, but it was too little too late for the Aztecs, who return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. (MST) when they travel to Air Force to take on the Falcons.
