Swimming Wins First Invitational of New Era

The San Diego State women?s swimming team took home top honors at the UC Irvine Distance Invitational Saturday in Irvine.

The Aztecs dominated the 10-team field as an SDSU individual won three of the four events in the meet. Freshman distance specialist Lisa Beebe was first in the 1000 freestyle, setting a personal record 10:40.67. The Scarlet and Black finished 1-2-3 in the 400 individual medley with sophomore Meghan Casillan winning the event in 4:38.80, followed by junior Mariana Luevano in 4:42.77 and sophomore Heather DeFelice in 4:43.94. In the 500 free, six of the top seven finishers were Aztecs, and freshman Erin Smith earned first place in 5:14.12. No Aztecs competed in the 1650 free, the final event of the meet.

The title is the first in an invitational for San Diego State since the women?s swimming program was reinstated in 1994.

The distance invitational was one of three invitationals held be UC Irvine over the weekend. The Aztecs were second in both the Individual Invitational and the Relay Invitational at the meet.
