Women's Soccer Downs Montana In Overtime

Oct. 1, 1999

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team won its second overtime game of the year when it edged Montana, 3-2 on Friday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

The Aztecs (7-3 overall) started off slowly, as the Grizzlies (4-4 overall) pressured early. SDSU fought off the early Montana surge. However, the Grizzlies were able to put a goal on the board at the 39:57 mark when forward Heidi Melville stole a pass made by Aztec defender Carrie Hawkins and turned it into a breakaway with SDSU goalkeeper Linnea Quinones. Melville cashed in on the chance and Montana went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

With the temperature in excess of 90 degrees, Aztec head coach sat most of his starters to open the second half. However, SDSU still found a way to get on the board when sweeper Danielle Small headed home a corner kick taken by midfielder Katie Hamilton at 48:28.

From that point on, the Aztecs took over, controlling the tempo and eventually adding a second goal at 65:54 when defender Kelly Grogg finished a cross from forward Kate Qually that was touched on by senior Lori LaCoursiere.

With SDSU continuing to pressure, the Grizzlies struck on a counter-attack 11 minutes later when midfielder Michele Badilla-Gesek played the ball into the area and forward Heather Olson found the back of the net at 76:32.

Following the Montana goal, the Aztecs once again took control of the game and had a chance to take the lead when junior midfielder Nicole Hagouel hit the post with a hard shot with five minutes remaining. However, SDSU was not able to capitalize and the game went into overtime.

Overtime picked up the way regulation left off, with the Aztecs controlling the action. SDSU senior midfielder Megan Mattes ended the game at 104:19 when she finished off a LaCoursiere shot that hit the post and was touched on by midfielder Fay deLeon. With her assist, LaCoursiere broke Catherine McGuire's school record of 35 assists in a career. LaCoursiere now owns the school records for goals, assists, and total points.

The Aztecs will travel to Las Vegas tomorrow morning and will take on 21st-ranked Kentucky at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
