Water Polo Finishes Fifth at Nationals

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's water polo team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, in the fifth-place game at the 1999 National Collegiate Championship Tournament on Sunday, May 9, at UC Davis. With the win, SDSU (23-19) finished fifth out of 16 teams in the tournament.

The Aztecs were led by Sara Hanneman with two goals and Larisa Baltgalvis added one. Hanneman tallied 10 goals for SDSU in four games at the tournament, finishing with 78 for the season. Baltgalvis had seven goals in the tournament bringing her season total to a school-record 103 goals. Aztec goalkeeper Curran Teigen was called upon to make eight saves.

The Aztecs defeated Long Beach State, 13-9, in the opening round of the tournament (on Friday, May 7), but fell to California, 8-2, in the quarterfinals the same day. SDSU bounced back on Saturday (May 8) to defeat host school UC Davis, 6-5 in overtime to advance to the fifth-place match..

This past season was the fifth for the San Diego State program that began in 1995. The Aztecs now have a second-place, two third-place, one seventh-place, and one fifth-place showing at the National Championships.
