The San Diego State track & field team finished fourth at the 1999 WAC Outdoor Championships today in Fort Collins, Colo. BYU took top honors with 214 points followed by UNLV (80), SMU (77) and the Aztecs (69).
Senior two-time All-American Miesha McKelvy defended her 1998 title by winning the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 12.84, setting a new SDSU record. McKelvy went into the championships with the nations fastest collegiate time, 12.93, and bettered it by 0.9 seconds. The SDSU 100m hurdles record was previously held by Deby LaPlante (12.86) set in 1979.
Also setting a new SDSU record was senior Lisa Domico in the long jump. Domico previously held the record with a 20-2 1/2 mark, but jumped 20-5 3/4, today for a second-place finish.
Junior heptathlete Aja Makaila Frary winning five of the seven events for a total of 5,152 points to win the heptathlon title. On Thursday, Frary took first-place honors in the long jump (18-7 1/4) and the 800 meter run (2:21.81) solidifying her 317 point margin of victory over UNLVs Heather Steadham (4,835). Wednesday, the junior from Seattle won the 100 meter hurdles (14.45), high jump (5-7 3/4) and the 200 meter dash (24.67). The 5,152 points provisionally qualifies Frary for the 1999 NCAA Track & Field Championships in June.
Juniors Amiee Crabtree and Kristi Draher finished second (12-6) and third (11-11 3/4), respectively in the pole vault.
