Russhion is in his first year working at San Diego State University. He’s worked as academic advisor for the lacrosse and water polo team as well as a learning specialist for a number of student-athletes from various sports.
Russhion comes to the Mesa from Northern Arizona University where he served as a graduate assistant for Student-Athlete Services. During his time with the Lumberjacks he liaised with academic staff to assess needs, implemented educational initiatives, and supported academic success for 400+ Division I student-athletes. He also developed and delivered comprehensive academic support services and individualized educational plans for academically at-risk athletes. His passion for student-athlete development played a major role as he acted as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), providing guidance and support to student-athletes in their role as SAAC representatives, and assisted in the development of initiatives and events organized by SAAC as he earned his master's degree in Human Relations at NAU.
Prior to his arrival in Flagstaff, Jones spent four years studying Mass Communications at North Carolina Central University where his academic achievement was exemplary. A heralded scholar, Jones earned numerous academic awards and scholarships which include repeatedly winning the North Carolina Central Foundation Scholarship and the James Lee Love Scholarship. Jones maintained Dean’s List status every semester of his undergraduate career and was a member of both the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society. While at North Carolina Central University, Jones worked in the Aspiring Eagles Academy, mentoring and tutoring students through an academic enrichment program designed to promote freshmen success.
Jones’ tenure within North Carolina Central University Athletics spans all four years of his collegiate career as he served as a Men’s Basketball student manager/practice player , eventually earning the rank of Head Men’s Basketball Student Manager. In this role, he directly supervised eight other student managers, coordinated equipment and laundry, conducted class checks, managed game day operations, coordinated film exchanges, and assisted the Director of Basketball Operations with travel responsibilities and team meals. Jones’ work contributed to two NCAA Tournament appearances and three MEAC Conference Championships. Well versed in academic achievement and collegiate athletics, Jones aspires to a career in athletic administration, integrating both of his passions.
