Mark Viramontes

Mark Viramontes joined the San Diego State baseball program last season as the Director of Player Development and will assume the duties of volunteer assistant coach for the 2011 campaign.

He arrived at SDSU after four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego. He brings over 14 years of baseball experience to the Aztec staff and will assume the role of SDSU[apos]s director of player development.

At USD, Viramontes assisted in the baseball office operations and also served as the catching coach. During summers of 2006-08) he was the head coach of the DuPage Dragons of the Central Illinois Collegiate Summer League (CICL). During his first season at the helm, he guided the Dragons to a franchise-best 25-19 overall record and the following summer led the team to the league championship game.

Prior to his stint at USD, Viramontes was an assistant coach at Cal State Los Angeles during the 2005 season where he coached the outfield and was in charge of the team[apos]s weight training program.

As an assistant at East L.A. College from 1999-2004, Viramontes helped the Huskies to three postseason trips including a state finals appearance in 2000.

Viramontes also spent the summers of 2004 and 2005 season[apos]s coaching in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) with the Brewster Whitecaps where he was the team[apos]s hitting instructor and third base coach.

His coaching career began assisting the 1996 junior varsity program at James A. Garfield High School in Los Angeles and the varsity team at San Gabriel High School from 1997-1998. He would later become an Associate Scout for the Cincinnati Reds, evaluating baseball talent in inner-city L.A.
